Sponsorship Opportunities in Flag Football

One of the fastest-growing sports in high school, and headed to the Olympics. Here is what that means for the programs that run it and the businesses that back them.

Scale The Olympic Debut How It Is Organized What to Expect

Scale
A Fast-Growing High School Sport

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) counted 102,360 girls playing high school flag football in 2025-26, up 48.7 percent from 68,847 the year before. The number of schools reporting girls flag football rose from 2,736 to 3,990 in the same year, and NFHS says the sport has now cracked its list of the 10 most popular girls sports (NFHS, 2025-26 participation survey release).

The first NFHS flag football rules book was published for the 2025-26 season, which gives schools in different states a common set of national playing rules to build on (NFHS, July 17, 2025).

Context
The Olympic Debut

In October 2023 the International Olympic Committee approved flag football as one of five sports added to the Olympic program for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Flag football will make its Olympic debut there (IOC Newsroom, Oct. 16, 2023).

For a local sponsor, the practical point is attention: a sport with a national spotlight ahead of it is easier to explain to a business owner than one with no story.

Structure
How It Is Organized

At the high school level, flag football is decided state by state: each state association chooses whether to sanction the sport, run pilot programs, or wait, and local districts add their own rules on sponsorship. In California, for example, the CIF Southern Section voted girls flag football in as an official sport in 2022 (CIF Southern Section vote, 2022) and the CIF sanctioned it statewide in 2023 (CIF statewide vote, 2023).

Outside schools, flag football is offered by clubs, travel organizations, and recreation leagues. We do not treat those as one structure: sponsor categories, approvals, and what a program can sell are set by each club or league, so check with the specific organization before you plan around it.

Sponsorship
What a Sponsor Should Actually Expect

The assets that usually work are sideline banners, a game-day program, and a sponsor-named tournament or jamboree. Many programs also overlook the schedule itself: a sponsor tied to opening day, a rivalry game, or a season-ending tournament gets a clear moment to be seen.

Because the sport is new at many schools and clubs, there may not be an established sponsor history yet. That can be an advantage, since packages and pricing can be set up from the start instead of inherited.

Sponsor communication matters as much as the signage. Send sponsors the schedule, a few game photos, and a short season wrap-up, so the business sees what it paid for before the renewal conversation.
